| Virginia Katherine (Kay) Thompson, age 83, loving mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, left her earthly home after an extended and courageous battle with lung cancer and liver failure on September 25, 2010. She was living in Charleston, Utah throughout her final year, with her son and daughter in law; Frank and Laurie Ostmann, who were with her when she passed on. Kay was born October 28, 1926 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of John Henry and Jennie Margaret Fleck. She married Francis Gabriel Ostmann later divorced. Kay later married Donald E. Thompson, who resided in Laurel Maryland on January 20, 1967. They were sweethearts and were only able to spend a few short years together before he was called home on February 5, 1974. As a single mom Kay worked very hard at various jobs including managing, cleaning and maintaining apartments to support her son and taught him by example how to work hard. She was later employed as a full time nanny and housekeeper for over 20 years. Kay was a great example of unconditional love and courage. She taught us how to face each day with joy and each person with a smile. Kay resided in Franklin Manor for 38 years in the home that she and Don built on the corner of Dartmouth and Delaware Streets. She had many good friends in the area where she lived and loved the involvement with her church family at the First Baptist Church. She loved those in her congregation and was loved by them as well. Kay is survived by; her son Frank and daughter in law Laurie of Charleston Utah. Three very special sisters; Alice Klein of Glen Allen, Virginia; Doris Phillips of Harrisonburg, Virginia and Mickey Shapard (George) of Glen Burnie, Maryland; special nieces and nephews; 8 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters; Shelby Jean Fleck, Lois Berkey, Nancy Borthwick, and Betty Weible. Kay’s family is extremely grateful to the employees at Alpine Hospice who lovingly helped us care for her the last months of her life. A family memorial service was held on September 27, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at Olpin-Hoopes Funeral Home located at 288 N. Main Street, Heber City, Utah
