Hezekiah Covington “Duck” Elliott, 83, of Broomes Island, MD, passed away on December 27, 2010, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. Duck was born on August 17, 1927 in Broomes Island, MD to the late Hezekiah C. and Mary Parks Elliott, Sr.
Duck served in the Army during the Korean War. He was native to Broomes Island and spent his entire life as a professional waterman combing the Patuxent River for what ever seafood was in season whether it was crabs, fish, manos or oysters. He ran a crab business out of his home and people came from all over for “Ducks” steamed hard crabs. Through his business he had many loyal customers which then became long time friends. Ducks’ love for the water also included a lifelong passion for duck hunting and he was an active member in Ducks Unlimited and the Calvert County Sportsman Club. He was also a member of Broomes Island Wesleyan Church and the Elks Club.
Duck was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary K. Elliott and sisters, Jeannette Stafford, Geraldine Hassett, Mazie Monnett, Anna Mae Denton and Jean Rutledge. He is survived by his daughters Kathy Lynne Elliott of Crofton, MD, Kimberly Anne Cegielski and husband Jim of Crofton, MD, a son, Michael Covington Elliott and wife Deb of Barstow, MD and stepdaughter, Roberta Baird of Waldorf, MD. Grandfather of 9, great grandfather of 10, Duck is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Denton, of Port Republic, MD.
The family will receive friends on Thursday December 30, 2010 at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, MD from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 31, 2010, in Broomes Island Wesleyan Church, 8520 Church Road, Broomes Island , MD at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in Asbury Cemetery, Barstow, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to either Broomes Island Wesleyan Church (c/o Mark Parks, 11181 Leisure Lane, Lusby, MD 20657) or the American Lung Association, 1840 York Road, Suite M, Timonium, MD 21093
