Elizabeth Williams Fick, 78, Lusby

Elizabeth Williams was born on October 26, 1932 in Miller County in the southwest corner of Georgia. Her parents Jonie Ivey and Ruth Melton Williams were sharecroppers until Jonie got a job building Liberty ships during World War II and earned enough money to buy a farm. Life on the farm with her three brothers, Curtis, Eugene and Tyrone was demanding, but she always remembered it fondly. Though a good student praised for her math skills, she left high school before graduating when she married Marlin Phillips, and in 1950 she gave birth to a daughter, Theresa.

Her first marriage ended after a few years and, with a daughter to support, she began searching for work. Never afraid to try new things she volunteered to work in a doctor's office and soon became a licensed practical nurse. In 1959 she married Air Force Lt. Charles August Fick from Chicago who was training in Georgia and together they had a daughter, Sandra, and three sons Charles, Bryan and Cary.

During this marriage she would live in Georgia, Texas, Florida, California, Illinois, Iowa, New Jersey, West Germany, and finally in southern Maryland. In her mid-forties she earned a GED and several years later received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland. She held many jobs throughout her life and was proud to have been a Federal Civil Servant, first in Germany, then at the U. S. Naval Academy, Patuxent River NAS, and lastly at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

After retirement she served as a substitute and home school teacher in St. Mary's and Calvert Co., and she fulfilled two lifelong dreams: one to go to New York and see a Broadway musical, the other to see the autumn leaves in New England. Though she had lived and traveled throughout the United States and Europe, she remained at heart a country girl from Georgia.

Elizabeth passed away May 6, 2011. She is survived by her husband, her five children, her two grandchildren, Heather and Jason and three great-grandchildren and by her brother, Tyrone. She was a kind and loving soul and will be dearly missed.
